Every day, your body is giving you feedback about the choices you are making in your life. If you are taking good care of it, your body rewards you with vibrant energy, pleasurable sensations, a positive mood and good health. It does this by upsetting your mood, making you feel anxious, irritable or depressed, and/or by giving you frequent headaches, indigestion and other aches and pains. It will also tell you how well you’re taking care of it by your physical shape.

Excess weight is just one of the many signs that show us our diet and lifestyle choices aren’t working. So, if we take a good look at ourselves in the mirror and then tune in to how we are feeling, we will know instantly whether we need to make changes or not. If we look around and apply this yardstick to the average American, it becomes readily apparent that the American lifestyle is very unhealthy-----and people’s bodies are screaming this message!

Our society is calorie-rich and nutrient-poor, causing us to eat and eat and never get what we need to thrive. Currently more than half the adult population is considered overweight or obese. Poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles are two of the main culprits for weight gain. The goal for many is to lose weight. According to a 1992 survey from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an estimated 33-40 percent of women and 24 percent of men were dieting in the United States.

This is both good and bad news. On the plus side, it is important for people with excess weight to lose the pounds for health reasons.

According to the National Center for Health Statistics about 65% of all Americans are overweight and 30% of those are clinically obese. It’s a major national health concern because obesity is associated with a greater risk for diabetes, gallbladder disease, hypertension, hyperlipedemia, sleep apnea, coronary artery disease, osteoarthritis of the knees, gout, cancer and low back pain and an increased risk for metabolic syndrome that is associated with glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. But, excess weight and its associated health problems aren’t the only message saying our lifestyle is wrong. The average American also suffers from a wide variety of other health problems, such as depression, anxiety, frequent headaches, indigestion, fatigue, skin problems, allergies, sinus or respiratory congestion and so forth. Just because all of this is typical, doesn’t mean it’s normal!

If any of this describes you, how would you like to get some positive feedback from your body for a change? Wouldn’t it be great to have a happier mood, vibrant energy, a sensation of pleasure from your body and get to “look good” in the process? Of course it would!

Well, you won’t get there by having some kind of “extreme make-over.” You won’t get there by feeling guilty or bad about yourself and mentally punishing yourself for a “lack of willpower.” Will power has little to do with it! The secret is learning to work with the body’s messaging system. You see, the cells of your body talk to each other by means of little chemical messengers (hormones, prostaglandins, etc.). These chemical messengers control cycles of rest and activity, mood, maturation, reproduction, immune responses, metabolic rate and appetite----the last two being very important when it comes to weight loss.

If you create the right chemical messengers in your body, your metabolism will increase, your appetite will decrease, your mood and immune system will be enhances and you’ll look and feel better without struggling with your body. You will learn how to co-operate with your body rather than trying to control it with willpower.

For years, the weight loss has been, “eat less and exercise more.” Yet, the research shows that 90% of the people who lose weight in this manner simply gain it back. Why is this so?

Well, as we mentioned above, appetite, metabolism and mood are all controlled by messenger chemicals in the body. When you restrict calories, the cells of the body assume that there is a “famine” going on. In response, cells send chemical messengers that reduce metabolism (the rate at which you burn calories). This conserves the body’s energy during the “famine.”

Because your metabolism is lower, your energy is reduced, so you become less physically active. Your mood also changes because you feel deprived, so your body is attracted to foods that enhance mood----particularly carbohydrates. When food is available, other chemical messengers are released to stimulate the appetite and program the body to store energy (fat) in preparation for the next famine. Thus, a vicious cycle of “feast” and “famine” ensures.

So, what are the causes of excess weight? They are the same four root causes that contribute to the development of all diseases. These root causes are: unresolved mental and emotional stress, nutritional deficiencies, toxic overload and physical trauma to the tissues.

In addition, fat itself acts like a gland, secreting its own chemical messengers. One of these is a hormone called leptin. Leptin is supposed to increase your metabolism and reduce your appetite. However, inflammation blocks the action of leptin.

Inflammation is very common in most Americans because of the large quantity of chemicals in our food, water and air. Inflammation cause fluid retention and since it is very common for Americans to have intestinal inflammation, it’s very common to have excess fluid and fat in the abdominal area. Since a gallon of water weighs eight pounds, it is very easy to have 5-15 pounds of excess water stored in the tissues of the body.
One can see that unless one changes the type of chemical messages being sent by the cells, one is fighting a losing (or “gaining”) battle. Conversely, by getting our cells sending the right chemical messages, we can increase energy, reduce appetite, enhance mood and have a better functioning immune system. There are four basic keys to achieving this goal, as follows.

Many toxins are not water soluble. This includes mercury, formaldehyde and many petrochemicals, such as gasoline. These chemicals can only be dissolved in fats. Many household cleaning products, cosmetics, dry cleaning solvents, and agricultural chemicals fall into this category. So, when these chemicals get into the body, the body has to attach them to fats in order to transport and eliminate them
The body is increasing cholesterol production in order to mop up environmental toxins and protect sensitive tissues like the nerves. This also explains why lower cholesterol levels are associated with an increased risk of cancer.

Detoxification is one vital key to weight loss. We have to have a healthy liver, colon and kidneys to lose weight. Often toxins being released from fat breakdown will also try to come out our of the skin, causing itching and skin rashes. So, knowing how to detoxify the body with cleansing techniques is absolutely critical to any weight loss program. Consuming healthy fats is also critical to weight loss, because we need healthy fats to help the body transport and eliminate these toxins

Cleansing and Detoxification

A toxic colon is a major factor in the development of food intolerance leading to chronic ill health. You cannot expect to be well if the main organ responsible for ridding the body of toxic waste is under-functioning. When the colon is irritated by diet, stress, drugs, chemicals, and other substances, it tries to protect itself by producing more mucus. This additional mucus can bind with the sludge from refined foods, such as white flour, and build up on the wall of the bowel, narrowing the lumen. This layer of gluey, hardened feces can weigh several pounds and is a good place for harmful organisms to breed. Do not think because you have regular bowel movements, or even diarrhea, that you have escaped this problem.

The stool can pass daily through a dirty colon and leave the accumulated residue on the walls behind. There is no need to get panicky about the amount of weighty garbage you might be carrying around with you, there is a great deal you can do about it.

How This Toxic Layer Can Affect the Body

The local effects of this poisonous residue are irritation and inflammation of the colon the general reactions include diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, headaches, dull eyes, poor skin, spots, aching muscles, joint pains, and depression. The poisons circulate via the blood through the lymphatic system to all parts of the body. Cleansing the Colon

Colon cleansing is the first step on the road to recovery. When you have cleansed your colon and restored the balance of the good and bad bacteria, when you have adequate production of enzymes and your dietary intake and internal production of vitamins is correct, your food intolerance should greatly improve or disappear. I believe the benefits of colon cleansing are many, not only in terms of health, but also as it relates to appearance of the skin, looks vibrant; cellulite, water retention, and blemishes disappear; and the whites of the eyes regain a youthful clearness. How quickly you want to clean out your colon is your choice. Some people are so tired of being under par, they are willing to endure the effects of rapid cleansing. Don’t Worry About Calories, Just Eat Quality Food


The single biggest reason why so many Americans are overweight and sick is because we are eating refined and processed foods. These foods are lacking in vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other phytonutrients the body is looking to obtain from food. When we eat these foods, we may be getting enough calories, but we still feel hungry because the body is still looking for the nutrition it needs.

Refined sugars (sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, fructose, etc.), white flour, polished rice, processed vegetable oils, margarine, shortening and just about all processed and packaged foods fall into this category. If you want to lose weight and be healthy, you must start eliminating these foods from your diet and replacing them with who, natural unprocessed foods that are nutrient-rich. When you do so, your body will get the nutrition it needs and stop telling you it is hungry.

Starchy vegetable
s, such as potatoes and corn will turn to sugar in the body. Same with white flour and white flour products and white rice. So you many not think you are eating sugar but it turns to sugar. Corn is also high in sugar.

Avoid milk. Only use cultured milk products like buttermilk, whey, cottage cheese and yogurt.

A lot of people are allergic to whole wheat and wheat products and don’t know it. That can keep you from losing.

Avoid all soda and especially diet soda. Soda only makes you more hungry so you drink more and more and eat more. Avoid all processed food and packaged foods as they are processed. Avoid clams, shrimp and lobster as they are bottom eaters and carry parasites. Avoid all pork, it is hard to digest and carries parasites.

Buy whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, more fish, chicken and turkey. And try to buy all organic. Eat the foods that are good for you first and your body will start craving the good foods while your desire for the “junk” foods will diminish.

Your body is made up of mostly water. In fact, water makes up 75 to 85 percent of your cells. And the reason your thirst for water on a regular basis, perhaps even hourly basis is due to three main benefits your body receives from water: You should be drinking ½ ounce of water per pound of body weight. Don’t Put Yourself On A Guilt Trip

Being unhappy sends the wrong chemical messages to your cells. So, “beating yourself up” mentally and emotionally for being overweight is only going to perpetuate the problem.

Conversely, it has been scientifically documented that pleasurable experiences (such as loving relationships, laughter, enjoyable activities, time spent in nature, etc.) cause the body to send out chemical messages that reduce inflammation, enhance immunity, promote healing, improve metabolism and otherwise enhance health and well-being. In fact, the biggest single factor in having a long and healthy life isn’t your weight, your diet or your exercise level----it’s your attitude. People who experience pleasure in life live longer, healthier lives.

So, instead of being hard on yourself, be gentle with yourself and find ways to experience pleasure in your life. Find activities you enjoy (walking, gardening, swimming, dancing, etc.) and do them. Treat yourself to a massage or a pleasant bath. Make friends. Make love. Do things that help you find joy and fulfillment.

Furthermore, enjoy your food! Make a decision to enjoy whatever you decide to eat. This means taking time to notice the color, aroma, texture and taste of each bite. It also means eating your food slowly and chewing it thoroughly. A good way to train yourself to do this is to put your fork or spoon down after each bite and take some nice deep breaths while chewing. If you do this, you’ll automatically eat less and feel more satisfied.

Don’t drink with your meals, it dilutes your digestive juices so that your food doesn’t digest properly.
It is best to drink 30 minutes before meals and 30 minutes after meals so.

Eat Small, But Balanced Meals On A Regular Basis

Here is a sure-fire recipe for gaining weight, even on good foods, is skipping breakfast and eat a big meal right before going to bed. This puts your blood sugar on a roller-coaster and results in a daily famine-feast cycle. You aren’t hungry in the morning, so you don’t eat. Your body, thinking it is starving sends messengers to lower your metabolism and energy level throughout the day. By night, your body is starving, and you eat too much. However, since you are inactive (going to sleep), the body stores the excess calories for tomorrow’s famine.”

Always, always eat something for breakfast. Always start the day with some quality fat and protein. For example---avocado, eggs, meat, whole milk yogurt with fruit, nuts or oatmeal with butter or cream (not sugar). If eating isn’t possible then be sure to have a protein drink. Correct Underlying Health Problems

Part of the secret of weight loss is to identify some of the specific health issues that may be inhibiting your ability to lose weight. Enzyme Activity Linked to Obesity

BOSTON (November 7, 2001)- The increased activity of a single enzyme in fat cells may be a common cause of obesity and obesity-linked diseases, including diabetes, according to an animal study conducted by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the University of Edinburgh and published in the Dec. 7 issue of Science. The findings could eventually pave the way for future drug development to curb visceral obesity - the "beer belly" fat concentrated in the abdomen.

"Hundreds of studies have led to the conclusion that any fat can be problematic, but it's much, much more dangerous when it's accumulated in the abdomen," notes lead author Jeffrey S. Flier, M.D., an endocrinologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and the George C. Reisman Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "Pound for pound, intra-abdominal fat is much more likely to cause diabetes, heart disease and other diseases that make up the metabolic syndrome."

To identify the molecular mechanism behind the accumulation of the excess abdominal fat, Flier and his colleagues looked at the role of the glucocorticoid hormone cortisol, the "fight or flight" hormone that helps people survive stressful situations. Observations of patients with the endocrine disorder Cushing's syndrome - who have too much cortisol in their blood - had shown that they develop increased intra-abdominal fat as well as other metabolic symptoms. This led Flier to hypothesize that obese patients - who don't typically have increased blood cortisol levels - may be producing increased amounts of cortisol in their fat cells.

To test this hypothesis, Flier and his colleagues studied the enzyme 11beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11 beta HSD-1), which has the unique ability to produce cortisol in cells that are not normally associated with cortisol production. This enzyme is known to be present in fat cells.

The researchers created a group of transgenic (Tg) mice that overproduce 11 beta HSD-1 in roughly the same quantities previously found in the fatty tissue of obese humans. As predicted, these mice had increased levels of cortisol in their fat, but not in their blood. The Tg mice were then compared with a group of non-Tg mice.

For the first nine weeks of life both groups of mice were fed low-fat diets, and their body weights were indistinguishable. But, after nine weeks, the Tg mice steadily gained weight, and by 15 weeks of age, weighed 16 percent more than the non-Tg mice. The Tg mice were also more sensitive to weight gain when fed a high-fat diet. An external examination of the mice showed prominent weight gain in the abdominal areas of the Tg mice.

Further tests using X-ray absorptiometry to measure fat in the whole body and in the abdominal region showed that fat accumulation in the abdominal region of non-Tg mice on high-fat diets was comparable to that of Tg mice on low-fat diets. The ratio was further exaggerated when Tg mice were fed high-fat diets.

"We were surprised to find that it took only a modest increase in this enzyme to cause the mice to become viscerally obese. The animals also developed diabetes, became resistant to insulin, developed high blood lipids and actually ate more. We now also know that the mice became hypertensive," says Flier.

This study tells us that increasing this single enzyme in fat cells results in an unexpectedly major impact," he adds. Coupled with findings from the University of Edinburgh showing a correlation between increased enzyme
activity in fat tissue and obesity in human subjects, the findings strongly suggest that the 11 beta HSD-1 enzyme is an exciting pharmaceutical target for the treatment of visceral obesity.

"Obesity is a massive problem in our population," says Flier, who has been studying the molecular mechanisms of obesity for the past decade. "It's linked to a huge burden of disease - hypertension, coronary disease, atherosclerosis, cancers, reproductive disorders, diabetes. In fact, an estimated 80 percent of diabetes cases would not exist in the absence of obesity. If we could attack obesity, not only would people feel better, it would also improve all of these other disease states."

Study co-authors include Hiroaki Masuzaki, M.D. and Hiroshi Shinyama, M.D., of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Janice Paterson, Nicholas M. Morton, M.D., John J. Mullins, M.D., and Jonathan R. Seckl, M.D., of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Hypothalamus & Pituitary Glands

 

The hypothalamus is a part of the limbic system located near the center of the brain. It is here that most of the involuntary and endocrine functions of the body, along with many aspects of emotional behavior, are controlled. The hypothalamus has the ability to send signals to other areas of the brain. The hypothalamus is the regulator that decides exactly where the signal goes to next.

A pleasant odor can gain deeper access into the brain because the hypothalamus does not reject it. Unpleasant odors are blocked and cause less stimulation to the brain and nervous system. If the signal is not blocked, it can reach the cortex in less than one second. Such rapid access is why inhalation is one of the best ways to gain access to the brain and the reason why many street drugs are snorted through the nose.

Some essential oils that can affect the regulatory action of the hypothalamus are Bergamot, Frankincense and Geranium. Pituitary

Before we reach for an herb or supplement to help us deal with stress, let's look at the first-and most important- thing we ) need to do to reduce stress in our lives. Since most of the stress we encounter in the modern world is psychological, we need to deal with the problem at its source-the mind.

Although we may be conditioned to respond to those unpaid bills or that freeway traffic as a threat to our existence, it really isn't. If we can retrain our mind, we can actually retrain the way our body responds to these events and avoid triggering the cascade of stress- producing hormones in the first place.

Adaptagens

When it comes to dealing with stress, the most important supplements a person can turn to are a class of herbs called adaptagens. Adaptagens get their name from their ability to mediate Selye's general adaptive syndrome. Adaptagens work on the hypothalamus and pituitary glands to reduce the output of stress hormones, thereby lowering stress responses in the body.

The first herb recognized to have adaptagenic properties was Eleuthero root (formerly known as Siberian ginseng). Russian researchers discovered this distant cousin of ginseng improved stamina and endurance in athletes, reduced errors in workers, and helped improve the immune response. It acts as a tonic to the adrenal glands and helps the body withstand heat, cold, infection, and physical stresses, including radiation.

When Americans first went into space they came back very ill. Russian cosmonauts were not experiencing the same problems. Dr. Bruce Halstead, a California M.D. and researcher, asked the Russians to share their secret. Now American astronauts also use eleuthero root to help them adapt more easily to weightlessness in space.

Since the discovery of Eleuthero root, numerous other adaptagens have been identified. One of these is schizandra berries, a tonic used in Chinese medicine. Schizandra helps with many of the health problems brought on by chronic stress, including disturbed sleep patterns, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of concentration, forgetfulness and irritability. PARASITES AND WORMS


Parasites and worms are scavengers. They are organisms that live within, upon or at the expense of another organism, known as the host, without contributing to the survival of the host.

Parasites take on the vibration of the host they invade. They are therefore very hard to detect. They can be seen in the eyes by a trained Iridologist. Parasites will show as radii solaris lines (spokes like the spokes of a wheel that show upon the iris when they are present).

Parasites and worms feed off toxins and waste materials of the body. If the body is clean then the scavengers have nothing to live on. The danger of having them in the body is that their waste is extremely poisonous to us. Many parasites produce toxic substances harmful to the host. Other parasites act as foreign-body irritants in the tissues of the host and call forth a chronic inflammatory reaction. Some worms rob the host of serious amounts of blood and large tapeworms depriving it of digest food.

Parasites vary in their effect on their host. Sometimes they seem to be harmless. The parasites considered dangerous are called "pathogens." The parasite which causes malarial fevers is an example of this. Many protozoans (one celled animals) are parasites, such as a certain type of amoeba which can destroy the lining of the intestines of humans. They produce a painful and serious disease called "amoebic dysentery." It can cause the body to become dehydrated and eventually cause bleeding and ulceration in the bowel.

Flatworms and roundworms are parasites that can cause serious damage and can often kill their hosts. There is one type of flatworm called "fluke" which lives and grows quite large in the intestines, liver, lungs or blood of animals and man. The tapeworm is another parasite which matures in the intestines, attaching itself to the intestinal wall with what appears to be suckers or hooks. The tapeworm absorbs digested foods from its host, but the hookworm is the most harmful. It lives in the intestines and it feeds on the blood of the host.

Some form of external skin parasites are ticks and mites. The skin is irritated by such bites, but the spread of disease is far more serious than the bite. Ticks are blamed for spreading Rocky Mountain spotted fever, yellow fever, African sleeping sickness and typhus fever.

Trichinosis is a disease from eating infected or undercooked pork. The trichina is a tiny worm that infects pigs. The larvae, after burrowing into the intestinal wall of the pig, then enters its blood vessels. The blood carries the larvae on to the muscles where these tiny worms spread into the muscle fiber and live. Then when humans eat the pork, the cycle begins again in the human body. Symptoms of trichinosis are headaches, fever, sore muscles, swollen eyes, and even painful breathing. These symptoms are similar, to other diseases so people do not even realize that they could have internal worms.

Salmonella is a microscopic organism, which can spread throughout the body, that a person becomes acutely sick with what is commonly called cholera. It is felt that many people today have the intermittent fever of cholera, but are given antibiotics and never told what their problem has been.

Bacteria are one-celled organisms. There are three main types of bacteria: 1. Bacilli is rood-shaped, often grows in long chains, 2. Cocci is spherical and grows in grape-like clusters and 3. Spirilla is spirally curved.

Bacteria is involved in contagious disease such as diphtheria, chicken pox, measles, mumps, scarlet fever, whooping cough, tetanus, pneumonia, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, typhoid fever, syphilis, leprosy, meningitis and plaque.

The host can also feel pressure effects produced by parasitic cysts, especially if they are situated in the brain, spinal cord, eye, heart or bones.

Obstruction effects are produced by large ascarides migrating into and blocking the pancreatic ducts and even the intestines.

The body is a wonderful machine and when nourished and treated properly will not harbor these scavengers. When there are sufficient amounts of healthy bile in the intestines and the body is free of toxins the bile contains all it's normal required elements to keep it in a healthy working order. When there are sufficient amounts of healthy bile, the parasites and worms, their larvae and eggs are neutralized and evacuated rapidly out of the body.
We need to provide an environment that will not allow scavengers to survive. We need to live and eat the proper foods so they will not want to invade our bodies. Parasites and worms do not like a clean body. They especially do not like minerals. Herbs have high amounts of minerals and other elements that will help the body eliminate them.

Sometimes people become discouraged when they try to live on a cleaner, more wholesome diet or try to go on a cleansing purge. It is hard for them to stay on it because of the parasites within are crying for the kind of junk foods upon which they live and grow. It is probably wise to clean the body of the parasites first.
