GENERAL NUTRITION
You may find it strange to talk of nutrition in an herb oriented group. If
people become aware of how to eat well, the herbs work much better and people
feel much better. Of course, that's the major thing we're concerned about, is
getting people to feel much better.
There are several things that are happening. First of all, you should be aware
of all the food on the grocery store shelves today did not exist 5 or 10 years
ago. In other words it has been invented, it's not healthy for us. Further more,
they are predicting that in another 10 or 15 years 2/3 of the food on the
grocery store shelves will be invented food rather than produced. Foods are very
deficient today. A carrot today has 1/4 the vitamin A that it had 25 years ago.
Why is that? Because the soil is so deficient due to our farming process and use
of chemical fertilizers that plants can't extract out vitamins from the earth
any more. Our vitamins are all in chemical form and as a result we're finding we
are the most over eating - under- nourished nation in the world. One of the
reasons we're always over eating and constantly hungry is because we are
under-nourished. The brain keeps you searching for good food until your body's
nutritional needs have been met. Some people introduce multi-vitamins into their
diet and they are amazed how their appetites drop. Taking in consideration of
that, if your eating a lot of junk food or on the go a lot and can't get a lot
of good foods in your diet then you should consider using a multi-vitamin to
fill the "gap". "Live Longer Now" by Perkins
Herbs won't help you to live longer but can improve your health. He has a
chapter on living longer. Dr. Christopher died at age 74 but he was in a wheel
chair at 35 and was told by medical doctors he'd be there forever but wasn't.
Paavo Arolia ('83) had severe lung problems, alcoholic and 150 lbs overweight
and got to good health.
You should know the way you eat or exercise today may strongly effect how
pleasant or unpleasant your life will be from about 50 years onward. By not
thinking about your future now, you may do a great deal more to yourself than
shorten your life span by 20 years or so. You may be condemning yourself to pain
and illness. You can not start too young to prevent this. I feel this is really
what our herbs and nutrition are all about. Assuring us that we don't go into
the degeneration diseases such as arthritis, gout, diabetes and heart problems
that are so common in our society today. These are the 4 most common
degenerative diseases.
Are you aware our lifestyles really haven't been extended? We hear about how we
live to be 74 on the average and in other countries for example Ecuador is 44.
If you are 40 years old in the U.S. you will live 9 months less that a 40 year
old will live in Ecuador. The point being, they have lots of childhood illnesses
which our medical profession has been able to wipe out. If you get to the point
of 40 you don't have a better chance now than you had when you came to this
country. The junk food with many eat has to be eliminated for healthy fresh
fruits and vegetables, whole grains, seeds and nuts and organic chicken, turkey
or beef.
RULES FOR HEALTHY EATING:
1. FOOD IS FUEL FOR HEALTH. If your eating because it taste good, your
not going to get far because it’s only going to taste good as long as it’s in
your mouth. We eat because food is fuel for health. If you don’t, you will end
up with degenerative disease.
2. IF IT’S GOD MADE IT’S GOOD FOR YOU. If man made it, it probably isn’t good
for you. Pasteurized milk vs raw, fertile eggs vs storage, butter vs margarine.
We talk of some examples as we go through this. I’ll try to give you some rules
to help you make decisions in the store and the restaurant.
3. EAT FOODS THAT SPOIL but eat them before they do. Did you every
consider the fact that digestion is a process of spoilage? The food must be
broken down in your system before you can utilize it. If it has preservatives
added to it that prevent the breakage of the food it’s very difficult for you
digestive system to have food setting in the system much longer than it should,
producing gas, bloating and general discomfort. So please don’t eat food that
has been preserved. That means you’ll have to depend on your refrigerator and go
to the store more frequently. If that box is setting on your shelf 3 months from
now, you know it has to have preservatives. Food that is dehydrated won’t spoil.
If you put liquid back into this food it will begin to spoil. If you make a
poultice with our herbs and leave it set it will get mold on it.
4. EAT FRUITS IN SEASON. This is a very powerful rule. Stop and consider
when you have the hot months what is in season, Watermelon, Peaches, Grapes,
Plums, Cantaloupe and all the vegetables that have a lot of water in them. What
is in season in January? Citrus! What season is this -- colds & flu. These
fruits are high in vitamin C. by eating fruits in season you’ll save on the
grocery bill. Best to eat local foods. Bananas grown in Mexico or Hawaii are
picked green and gassed so they don’t spoil in shipping. If you eat local foods
you’ll have less chemicals and sprays that are used for shipping and this will
help you avoid drug foods.
5. EAT LIFE GIVING FOODS. Avoid foods that are refined. They take a
natural food and de-neutralize it. Sugar is a good example. Kids can grow up on
sugar in the cane fields and cane never causes cavities or weight problems but
as soon as they are in the city and have all the foods with white sugar they
develop weight problems and cavities. This has been proven scientifically. When
we buy refined sugar all the vitamins and minerals have been taken out. Because
the vitamin and minerals are gone we have an empty calorie product. Your body
keeps crying for more because we aren’t satisfied with what we’ve gotten. You
need to be aware of what your buying. Refining makes it pretty and white but
doesn’t make it healthy. The major problem of cereal storage warehouse is rats
eating the cardboard boxes because they know there is more nutrition in the
boxes than the cereal. If you want to know what the iron is in the cereal take a
magnet and run through it and see what you get.
6. DON'T EAT FRUITS THAT ARE ADULATED. This includes foods that are
preserved, sprayed, gassed and waxed. Apples are waxed, cucumbers, oranges,
grapefruit, tomatoes are gassed.
7. AVOID DEAD FOOD. This is food that is over cooked or over processed. There is
no way you could every digest it.
A. The very healthiest of vegetables are fresh vegetables and dehydrated
ones.
B. Next best is home frozen.
C. Store frozen - But they add lots of salt and color enhancers.
D. Home canned.
E. Commercially canned. This is the worst because they cook and cook them
so they won’t spoil.
F. BE A LABEL READER.
Bran is outer portion of wheat berry. Bran is a very good fiber food, but you
need to buy bran at the health food store and put it in your cereal. Nutri Grain
by Kellogg is very good and maybe sugar and salt free.
Granola - READ YOUR LABEL -- It can read 100% Natural - but be loaded with
sugar.
Oatmeal is very good as long as you use the long cooking kind.
8. ALKALINE VS ACID BATH IN THE BODY. This is very important but
most don't know much about.
Disease can not start in the human body when your PH is off. I'll teach you how
to eat foods to keep it on. Also only arthritis and gout will always set into
the body when your loaded with acid. So if you have any freaky joints, aches and
pains in your joints you should try to change your diet to have more alkaline
foods than acid. Goal to strive for is 80% alkaline and 20% acid.
Alkaline Foods
Fruits - inc. citrus fruits - but must be tree ripened
Vegetables
Dried Beans
Tofu and it's very high in protein
Goats milk (cow's milk is acid)
Honey (sugar is acid and very habit forming)
Meat
Grains
Dairy
EACH DAY EAT
5 kinds of vegetables - salad with vegetables
2 fruits
1 protein
3 starches
or 1 starch and 2 protein
Food Combining is really for only the hard core health nuts. You can just about
eat one food at a time and that's pretty hard. Unless your digestive system is
wiped out, food combining is not necessary.
Too much acid in your system, too many acid forming foods will stress your
kidneys. Because of uric acid is a by product of acid foods and leaving an acid
settling in our joints known as arthritis, gout and all joint inflammation. We
